Digging Deep

Digging Deep Into Prayer Week 1

Week One Prayer Exercise (You can download a PDF of this exercise here.)

Take 15-20 minutes and practice conversing with God through meditation.

Step One: Select the passage you are going to start to work through. Read the entire passage.

The passages below might be a good place to start.

  • Exodus 20:1-17 (The Ten Commandments)
  • Matthew 5-7 (The Sermon on the Mount)
  • Luke 15:1-16:13 (A series of parables)
  • Psalm 1
  • Psalm 23
  • Romans 8

Step Two: Start to work through the passage sentence by sentence.

Take a sentence and ask yourself:

  • What is God teaching me/saying to me through this sentence?
  • How can I thank or praise God because of what he has said in this sentence?
  • What sin is revealed in my life because of what he has said in this sentence?
  • How should I pray because of what I have learned in this sentence?

Repeat this process throughout the passage until you are ready to stop.

Step Three: Spend a little time in free prayer.

Pray for the needs of yourself, your family, your friends, and your acquaintances.

Pray for your church and the people you are trying to help know Jesus.

Pray for anything else that comes to mind.

Step Four: Close by having a minute or two of silence, allowing yourself to sit in God’s presence.

(The NIV groups Verses 1-6 into a stanza, verses 7-9 into a stanza, verses 10-13 into a stanza, and verse 14 into a stanza).
  3. Paraphrase the first stanza in your own words. Pray the idea that your paraphrase is communicating.
  4. Repeat this process for all of the stanzas.

Pray by Meditating on Psalm 8

  1. Read the entire passage slowly.
  2. Go back to the beginning of the passage. Read the first sentence.
  3. Meditate by asking…

A proposed plan to pray through the Psalms in a month.

Below you will find the Book of Common Prayer method for reading through the Psalms in a month. You can use this method as a way to pray through the entirety of the Psalms. This method can be incredibly beneficial if done over and over for a considerable period of time.

The Psalms are broken into morning and evening readings.

In the morning, read through the selected Psalms. Choose one to pray through using the methods described above.

In the evening, read through the selected Psalms. Choose one to pray through using the methods described above
