Why did God choose to come to us as a baby, born to a poor couple, in a barn? Why not come as an adult with plenty of resources to help people? Why not come as a ruler to help stop war? God came to earth as a baby because His main desire was to show us how much He loves us. We are all born as babies and struggle to come into this world. God wanted to experience all that we experience because of his love. When a baby is born it is completely dependant on people to care for it. It cannot survive without someone to clothe him, feed him, protect him, teach him, etc. God came to us totally vulnerable. He put himself in a place where he would not survive without us. He didn’t just want to come to show us His love, but to have a love relationship with us. He wanted us to love and care for Him. So, He came as a baby whom we can naturally love and care for. Jesus was born to a family because He is all about community and caring for each other. He didn’t come with all of the resources or political power to fix things. He came to live like we have to live with no other resources at times other than our relationship with God. He didn’t come to fix situations, but to fix people. He became fully human so that He could fix the human problem – separated from God by our sin. He came as a baby and lived 33 years as we live so that when He died for our sins, we could know that it would work for us. And when He rose again as a human being, we would know that we too could live forever with Him. The Prophet Isaiah saw this coming many years before Jesus was actually born. “For unto us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be upon His shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6. That is our text for this advent season. A baby has been born to us! What an awesome event! What awesome love! What awesome change this can bring to us!
In His Service,
